Professor Fred Harris

UHM Department of Physics and Astronomy

"Charm in China"

-------------------------

The development of the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider in the 1980s, with advice from US physicists, sparked the beginnings of modern science in China.

Led by Dr. Harris, the University of Hawaii has been collaborating with their Chinese colleagues since 1994, using the collider's unique capabilities to study a wide range of fundamental particle physics phenomena, including "quarks" and "charm".

After receiving his Ph.D from the University of Michigan, Dr. Harris joined the High Energy Physics Group at the University of Hawaii, and was a member of it for 47 years until his retirement in February 2017.
