Originally from Kauai, Terrilea Burnett received a doctorate in molecular oncology in 1997 from the University of Hawaii Cancer Center. Although she has since worked on topics such as colorectal cancer and skin cancers her primary interest is in hereditary cancers, and how these impact Hawaii families.
In her talk Dr Burnett will focus on the pathogenesis of cancer, e.g., transformation from normal tissue to a cancerous tumor, on how “cancer genes” can be passed on through generations, and on one mechanism by which cancer genes increase the lifetime risk for developing cancer.
