Natural dyes are colorants derived from plants, insects or minerals. These dyes generally need the assistance of a mordant or metallic salt to chemically fix the color to fiber.  These mordants also alter the range of color of these dyestuffs – some of which could be found in our own kitchens.

Sara Oka is the Curator of Textiles at the Honolulu Museum of Art and received her BA in Textile
Design from the University of Washington, and her MFA in Fiber from the University of Hawaii.
