Kirsten Carlson

Owner, Fathom It Studios

Fathoming Antarctica as both Scientist and Artist

Kirsten is a professional scientific illustrator and science communicator, exploring ways to inform audiences about ocean-themed subjects using both science and art.  She has degrees in both biology and scientific illustration and works at the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology (HIMB) when she is not freelancing.

In the Fall of 2017 she spent seven weeks diving under the sea ice at the McMurdo Station in Antarctica, funded by the National Science Foundation.   She will take you on a dive, describe the technology and tools she used to draw and photograph in - 4°C water, the challenges she faced, and the scientific illustration projects that have been inspired by doing over 80 dives in some of the coldest water on our planet.

Kirsten is also the curator of the exhibit, SYMBIOSEASat
"The ARTS at Mark's Garage" (12 to 5 pm, Tue-Sat, March 1 – 31, 2019).  It features collaborations between six artists and eight scientists from HIMB, and 20 scientists participating in a Science as Art gallery.
