Dr Nienke van der Marel

UH Institute for Astronomy

"Exoplanets: how they form and where to find them"

How do we detect distant planets around other stars? How are they formed? How do we actually study their formation process if it takes millions of years? These and many more questions will be addressed in this talk on planets and planet formation.

Nienke van der Marel obtained her PhD in Leiden in the Netherlands in 2015. She works primarily on the structure of protoplanetary disks in which planets are currently forming. She uses observations of the Atacama Large Millimeter Array, which is located in Chile, in combination with data from the Keck telescope on Maunakea.
