Faculty Chair, UH Institute for Astronomy

The Magic of Total Solar Eclipses

Born in Syria, Dr Habbal obtained her PhD at the University of Cincinnati. She worked for several years at the Harvard Center for Astrophysics, then held a professorship at the University of Wales before moving to Hawaii in 2005. Her research focuses on the solar wind and on the Sun’s magnetic field.

Dr Habbal's efforts at organizing an eclipse expedition to India in 1995 led to the establishment of an international group of scientists sometimes referred to as the ”solar wind sherpas.” They have mounted six successful eclipse expeditions since 2001. Shadia has recently returned from Norway where she and her group studied the March 20th solar eclipse from four different locations
