Professor Chris Measures and Dr Mariko Hatta

UHM Oceanography Department

"Oceanography in the Arctic and the Disappearing Sea Ice"

In 2015 Chris and Mariko undertook a research cruise to the North Pole aboard the US Coastguard Cutter Healy. Their goal was to study the physics and chemistry of trace elements and isotopes in the Arctic Ocean before climate warming changes this unique environment.

They will describe how how complex oceanographic cruises are staged and recount some of their experiences and observations from this expedition.

Chris Measures received his PhD from the University of Southampton, UK, in 1978. After a 12-year stint in Boston, MA, he came to the University of Hawaii, where he has been studying trace element distributions in the ocean.  He has spent over 4 years at sea in his career to date.

Mariko Hatta received her PhD from the University of Toyama, Japan, in 2006.  She is now a graduate faculty member of the Oceanography Department.  Like Chris, she has participated in many national/international oceanographic research cruises (over 400 days at sea) determining trace element concentrations.
