Nellie Sugii

Conservation "Hawaiian Style"

 

Born, raised, and educated in Hawai`i, Nellie Sugii is the Manager of the Lyon Arboretum's Hawaiian Rare Plant Program.

 

Her work focuses on the curation, storage and propagation of the critically rare and endangered native Hawaiian plant flora and culturally significant Hawaiian crops.

 

In 2016 she was recognized as a U S Fish and Wildlife Recovery Champion for her leadership in the recovery efforts for Hawai'i's rare plant species, successfully propagating more than 500 of the over 1,300 native Hawaiian plant taxa, using techniques such as micropropagation, seed banking and greenhouse propagation.
