El Niño: To be or not to be?

An El Niño is a temporary warming of the equatorial Pacific ocean that can have major consequences for our climate. In May 2014 many indicators suggested that an extremely strong El Niño was developing, but by late August it is starting to appear that if one occurs it may be quite weak. We will discuss the factors that initiate El Niño conditions and discuss how the high degree of variability between these events makes their subsequent development hard to predict.
